What started out as an evening of scenes and monologues seven years ago, has grown since 2000, into an exciting two week festival of original, short one act plays. Our last showcase, produced in the heart of the theatre district, at the Sande Shurin Theatre on 43rd Street, represented the culmination of a search through over 300 plays that were submitted to the Workshop. From those plays, 7 were chosen, and 3 came from the Workshop, which as you can tell, means we are very selective with our choice of plays. The plays are double-cast, meaning Week 1 will have one group of actors, and Week 2 another. We are constantly on the lookout for new plays, as when we have the plays in hand, we can move into production within six weeks. But the plays can be hard to find.
I always look, not only for great material, but for great parts for our actors. Sometimes, for example, I will encounter a wonderful play that cannot be cast from the Workshop. After all, the purpose of the showcase is get the work out -- to have our actors seen by agents, managers, casting directors, as well as friends and family. It is a highly professional enterprise, with each production directed by actors from the Workshop. Overseeing the 14-16 productions is always an exhaustive process for me, but one that is tremendously gratifying. It is thrilling for all of us to have the many different productions rehearsing in and around Manhattan and finally coming together for our two week festival, where we play to consistently sold-out houses.
